In his first remarks after being sworn in on Monday in the Capitol Rotunda, Trump portrayed himself as the only person who could save the United States from recession and gave preliminary details of his first actions after taking office.

Thank you, thank you, thank you very much. Thank you very much. Vice President Vance, Speaker of the House Johnson, Senator Thune, Chief Justice Roberts, and the justices of the United States Supreme Court.
President Clinton, President Bush, President Obama, President Biden, Vice President Harris, and my fellow citizens, America’s Golden Age begins now.
From this day forward, our nation will once again prosper and regain respect around the world. We will be the envy of every nation, and we will not allow ourselves to be bullied again.
Every day of the Trump Administration, I will put America first.
Our sovereignty will be reclaimed. Our security will be restored. The scales of justice will be rebalanced. And the vicious, violent, and unjust weaponization of the Department of Justice and our government will end.
Our first priority is to build a proud, prosperous, and free nation. America will soon be greater, stronger, and more extraordinary than ever before.
I return to the presidency with the confidence and optimism that we are at the beginning of an exciting new era of success for our country. A wave of change is sweeping across this nation, it is spreading its light across the world, and America has an opportunity, as never before, to seize it.
But first, we must be honest about the challenges we face. And while they are many, they will be crushed by the great momentum we are witnessing in America.
As we gather today, we face a crisis of confidence in our government. For years, an aggressive and corrupt system has extracted power and wealth from our citizens, while the pillars of our society are broken and appear to be in total disrepair.
We now have a government that is unable to respond to even simple crises at home, while being embroiled in one catastrophic event after another overseas.
It fails to protect our great, law-abiding American citizens, while providing safe haven and protection to dangerous criminals, many of whom come from prisons and mental institutions and illegally enter our country from all over the world. Our government provides unlimited funding to protect foreign borders, but refuses to protect Americas borders, or more importantly, its own people.
Our nation is already unable to provide basic services during emergencies, as recently demonstrated by the wonderful people of North Carolina who were treated so poorly. And several other states are still suffering after hurricanes that hit just a few months ago.
Or more recently, in Los Angeles, were seeing fires that are still burning relentlessly. They started a few weeks ago, sweeping through homes and neighborhoods defenselessly, even affecting some of the wealthiest and most powerful people in our country, some of whom are sitting right here right now. Theyre already homeless. Its interesting.
But we cant let this happen. Theres nothing anyone can do about it. This is going to change. We have a public health system that doesnt work in times of disaster, but we spend more on it than any country in the world.
And we have an education system that in many cases teaches our children to feel ashamed and hate our country, even though we desperately try to give them love. Starting today, all of that will change, and it will change very fast.
My recent election was a mission to completely reverse a terrible betrayal, and all those betrayals that have taken place, to give back to the people their faith, their wealth, their democracy, and their freedom.
From this moment on, America’s decline ended.
Our freedom and our nations glorious destiny will no longer be denied. We will immediately restore integrity, competence, and loyalty to the American government.
Over the past eight years, I have faced more trials and challenges than any President in our 250-year history. I have learned a great deal in the process. And I can tell you that the road to revitalizing our Republic will not be easy.
Those who want to stop our cause are trying to take away my freedom and even my life.
Just a few months ago, an assassins bullet pierced my ear in those beautiful Pennsylvania fields. But I felt then, and I believe now, that my life was saved for a reason. I was saved by God to make America great again.

That’s why, every day, under the stewardship of our American patriots, we will respond to every crisis with dignity, strength, and power.
We will act with purpose and with swiftness to restore hope, prosperity, security, and peace to citizens of every race, religion, color, and creed. For the citizens of the United States, January 20, 2025 is Liberation Day.
I hope that our recent presidential election will be remembered as the greatest and most impactful election in our nation’s history.
As our victory demonstrated, the nation is rapidly rallying behind our agenda, with significant increases in support across nearly every segment of society: young and old, men and women, African Americans, Hispanics, Asian Americans, urban, suburban and rural, and, most importantly, we won strong victories in all seven battleground states and we won the popular vote by millions of votes.
To the black and Hispanic communities, I want to thank you for the tremendous love and trust you showed me with your votes. We set a record, and I will never forget it.
I heard your voices in the campaign, and I look forward to working with you in the months and years ahead. It is a great honor to be here today on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. In his memory, we will work together to make his dream a reality. We will make his dream a reality.
National unity is returning to America, and confidence and pride are higher than ever. In all we do, my administration will be driven by an intense pursuit of excellence and a relentless pursuit of success.
We will not forget our country, we will not forget our Constitution, we will not forget our God. We cannot do that.
Today I will be signing a series of historic executive orders. Through these actions, we will begin the process of fully restoring America and unleashing a common sense revolution. Its all about common sense.
First, I will declare a national emergency at our southern border. All illegal entry will cease immediately, and we will begin deporting millions of criminal aliens back to where they came from.
We will restore my Remain in Mexico policy. I will end catch and release. And I will send troops to our southern border to stop this catastrophic invasion of our Nation.
By the order I signed today, we will also be designating these drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.
By invoking the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, I will direct our Administration to use the full might of federal and state law enforcement to eliminate the presence of all foreign criminal gang networks that bring devastating crime to American soil, including our cities and downtowns.
As Commander in Chief, my highest responsibility is to defend our nation from threats and invasion, and that is exactly what I will do. And we will accomplish this mission at a level never before seen.
Next, I will direct all members of my Cabinet to mobilize the vast powers at their disposal to defeat record inflation, caused by massive overspending and rising energy prices, and to rapidly reduce costs and prices.
Thats why today I will also declare a national energy emergency. We will drill, baby, drill.
America will once again become a manufacturing nation, and we have something that no other manufacturing nation has: the largest reserves of oil and natural gas on earth, and we will use it. We will use it.
We will lower prices, fill our strategic reserves to their limit, and export American energy around the world.
We will become a wealthy nation once again, and the liquid gold beneath our feet will help make it happen.
By my action today, we will end the Green New Deal, we will rescind the electric vehicle mandate, save our auto industry, and fulfill my sacred promise to the great American autoworkers.
In other words, you will be able to buy the car of your choice. We will once again build cars in America at a rate no one could have imagined just a few years ago. Thank you to our nations autoworkers for your inspiring vote of confidence. We are doing very well with their vote.
I will immediately begin a comprehensive overhaul of our trading system to protect American workers and families. We will impose tariffs and taxes on foreign countries to benefit our citizens, rather than taxing our citizens to benefit other countries.
To this end, we are establishing an External Revenue Service to collect all duties, taxes, and revenues. This will bring large amounts of money from foreign countries into our coffers.
The American Dream will soon return and thrive like never before. To restore capacity and efficiency to our federal government, my administration will establish a new Department of Government Efficiency.
After years of illegal and unconstitutional restrictions on free speech by the federal government, I will also sign an executive order to immediately stop all government censorship and restore free speech to America.
I know full well that the vast power of the state will never again be weaponized to persecute political opponents. We will not allow that to happen. It will never happen again.
Under my leadership, we will restore fair, equal, and impartial justice under the Constitution and the rule of law. We will bring law and order back to our city.
This week, I will also end the administrations efforts to codify race and gender in every aspect of public and private life. We will create a society where everyone is admitted based on merit, regardless of color.
From today, official U.S. government policy will state that there are only two genders: male and female.
This week, I will reassign and give full back pay to all service members who were unjustly discharged for opposing mandatory COVID vaccines.
I will sign an order that will stop our warfighters from being forced to accept radical political theories and social experiments in the line of duty. This will end immediately. Our armed forces will be focused on their sole mission: defeating Americas enemies.
Just as we did in 2017, we will once again build the most powerful military the world has ever seen. Our success will be measured not only by the wars we win, but also by the wars we end and, perhaps most importantly, the wars we stay out of.
The legacy Im most proud of will be as a peacemaker and unifier. Thats what I want to be, a peacemaker and unifier. Im pleased to announce that as of yesterday, the day before I took office, hostages in the Middle East are being returned to their families. Thank you.
America will reclaim its rightful place as the greatest, most powerful, most respected nation on Earth, inspiring awe and admiration around the world. Soon, we will change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
We will put the name of our great President William McKinley back on Mount McKinley, where it should be and belongs. President McKinley made our country very rich through tariffs and his talent. He was a born businessman and he financed many of the great things done by Teddy Roosevelt, including the Panama Canal, which was then foolishly given to the country of Panama.
I mean, think about it, the United States spent an unprecedented amount of money on the Panama Canal, and it cost 38,000 lives, and we are being treated very unfairly for this stupid gift that should never have been made.
Panamas commitment to us has been broken. The purpose of our agreement and the spirit of the treaty have been completely violated. American ships have been grossly overcharged and treated unfairly. That includes the U.S. Navy... We are taking it back.
Most of all, what I say to the American people today is that it is time for us to act once again with the courage, the energy, and the verve of the greatest civilization in history. So that when we liberate our nation, we will lead it to new heights of victory and success. We will not be intimidated.
Together we will end the chronic disease epidemic and keep our children safe, healthy, and free from disease.
America will once again see itself as a nation on the move, one that increases our wealth, expands our territory, builds our cities, raises our expectations, and carries our flag toward new and greater prospects.
We will pursue our manifest destiny and reach for the stars, sending American astronauts to Mars and planting the Stars and Stripes on Mars.
Ambition is the lifeblood of great nations. And right now, our nation is more ambitious than any other. No nation can compare. Americans are explorers, builders, innovators, entrepreneurs, and pioneers. The pioneering spirit is in our DNA.
The call of the next great adventure echoes from the depths of our souls. Our American forefathers transformed a small group of colonies on the edge of a vast continent into a mighty republic of the most extraordinary citizens on Earth. No one has done it better.
Americans have traversed thousands of miles of rugged lands of pristine wilderness. They have crossed deserts, climbed mountains, braved great dangers, conquered the Wild West, ended slavery, freed millions from tyranny, lifted billions out of poverty, harnessed electricity, split the atom, sent a man to heaven, and placed the universe of human knowledge in the hands of man.
If we work together, there is nothing we cannot do and no dream we cannot realize.
Many thought it impossible for me to stage such a historic political comeback. But as you saw today, I did it. The American people have spoken.
I stand before you now to prove that you should never believe that something is impossible. In America, the impossible is what we do best.
From New York to Los Angeles, from Philadelphia to Phoenix, from Chicago to Miami, from Houston to here in Washington, D.C., our Nation was forged and built by generations of patriots who gave their all for our rights and freedoms.
They were farmers and soldiers, cowboys and factory workers, steelworkers and coal miners, policemen and pioneers who kept moving forward, forging ahead, and not letting any obstacle defeat their spirit or their pride.
Together they laid railroads, built skyscrapers, constructed great highways, won two world wars, defeated fascism… and triumphed over every challenge they faced.
After all weve been through together, we are about to embark on the greatest four years in American history. With your help, we will restore the promise of America, and we will rebuild the country we love.
We are one people, one family, one glorious nation under God. So to every parent with a dream for their child, and every child with a dream for the future, I am with you, I will fight for you, and I will win for you. We will win like never before.

Our nation has suffered greatly in recent years. But we will restore it and make it great again, more than ever before. We will be a nation like no other, one of compassion, courage, and excellence.
Our power will stop all wars and bring a new spirit of solidarity to a world that is angry, violent, and utterly unpredictable.
America will once again be respected and admired, including by people of faith and good will. We will prosper, we will be proud, we will be strong, and we will win as never before.
We will not be conquered, we will not be threatened, we will not be crushed, we will not fail. From this day forward, the United States of America will be a free, sovereign, and independent nation.
